What is Human Design?

Many of us seek to understand ourselves better. For when there is better understanding, there is more empowerment around how we choose to respond to what life presents. Plus, as human beings, we don’t love uncertainty, so there can be a drive to know - helping us feel safer and more in control (or is that my Line 1 talking?!)

When a colleague first mentioned Human Design to me, I didn’t pay it much attention. It felt a bit too woo-woo, primarily because it required birth information to create your unique bodygraph or chart. However, I came across it again in 2022, perhaps in a post on Instagram, and this time, I felt ready to take notice. Since then, I have been in a deep dive to know and embody this system, especially as a therapeutic coach always seeking to understand others more fully. I have felt an intuitive pull towards Human Design for both my clients, as well as myself. As a 1/3 Splenic Projector, Human Design has felt personally resonant and given me a language to understand myself better.

As I continue to learn and experiment with this system in my own life, in true 1/3 style, I am also doing this with my clients, many of whom have never heard of this system before but who have shown a curiosity and openness to learning something new. If you feel an interest in learning more about Human Design, read on…

There is truly magic in the world and it is not something I would have ever believed. The magic is in who we are, embedded into our own marvellous bodies like a rich vein of gold just waiting to be discovered. When we find this magic and tap into its power, it is as if we are suddenly plugged into life at last. Finally, we can live our greatness, in peace, in grace, in power, by living our design. - Ra Uru Hu

Like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, DISC assessment and the Enneagram, Human Design is a system of personality typology, offering a personal blueprint that tells a story of who you are, how you experience and process the world, how you best make decisions and what you need to do to be in harmony with your authentic self. The ‘blueprint’ comes in the form of your bodygraph or chart, which is generated using your birthday, birth time and birthplace.

This system was channelled by a man named Alan Robert Krakower (later known as Ra Uru Hu) in January 1987. Originally from Canada, Ra was living on the island of Ibiza when he had a “mystical experience” lasting eight days and nights with “a voice”. During this time, he received a transmission of information - what is now known as the Human Design system. He would spend the rest of his life dedicated to the development and teaching of this system around the world. There are many elements of Human Design that may be familiar with people who have an awareness of older spiritual systems, as it’s a synthesis of astrology, the Chinese I Ching, the Hindu chakra system, Jewish mysticism (Kabbalah), and quantum physics.

Human Design is a cross-cultural, ancient, and modern index of all the traits that make us human. This assemblage of information gives you a systematic way to consciously explore your personal narrative and to change your current story into one of unlimited, empowered, authentic living. Your Human Design will gift you with a new vocabulary, a new language to interpret a part of yourself that perhaps you've hidden away. Human Design not only gives you a new way of thinking about yourself but also a new way of talking about yourself. - Karen Curry Parker

Human Design is not meant to be a rulebook or another label but a language to help us remember who we are, what lights us up, and how to best honour and utilise our energy. During major life transitions or periods of uncertainty, having a foundation to return to that provides insight into ourselves can be a soothing balm for navigating unfamiliar territory with more grace and resilience.

There is a lot of information on the internet around Human Design, including many platforms where you can have your chart generated. However, the beauty, for me, in understanding your unique design is in crafting a story that brings all of the elements together into one cohesive tale of you. If you’d like to learn your story in the language of Human Design, please see my offerings here.
